History

1888On September 28th, 1887 the county of Bern gave permission to the municipality of Willigen to build a path through the "Aarlamm" from Sandey to the Finsteren Schlauche and up to the Hof-Meiringen road at Lammi. A handful of citizens from Schattenhalb and Meiringen grounded and financed a company which immediately began construction of the path. Within one year, the dangerous job was completed between both "Engen" and 12’000 people visited the gorge in this summer alone. In the following year, the galleries to the "Finsteren Schlauche" and the path to Lammi were completed.
1889 In the following year, the galleries to the "Finsteren Schlauche" and the path to Lammi were completed.In the same year a restaurant and ticket office with woodcarving shop were built at Sandey. 22’000 visitors went through the gorge during the summer.
1895The Grimsel Pass road was opened. This brought an increase in the number of visitors to the Aare Gorge of over 34’000.
1898The wooden gallery path to the east entrance was built. At the same time, the "Trochene Lamm" was reached by a steel construction across the Aare River.
1912The tram Meiringen – Reichenbach – Aare Gorge was inaugurated. Flood-lights were also installed in the same year.
1928New construction of restaurant.
1942Ausbruchs des Gletschersees beim Grubengletscher (Grimselgebiet). Grosse Teile der Laufstege werden durch das Hochwasser zerstört.
1947The opening of the Susten Pass road lead to a record of 180’000 admissions.
1957The tram between Meiringen – Reichenbach – Aare Gorge went out of business and the tram lines were removed.
1960The bridge and entrance to the "Trochenem Lamm" were demolished.
1987Renovation of restaurant..
1993Safety tests carried out on the stability of the steel girders along the wooden paths are found to be sufficient. As an additional safety feature, further steel bars are added to all the hand rails.
1998Construction of the covered terrace as conservatory and the new ticket office.
2003Construction of the swing bridge over the Aare river made the east entrance to the gorge accessible by public transport.
2005Construction of the children’s playground in front of the restaurant .
2008New construction of the east entrance building with the restaurant 'Aare-Bistro'.
